Obv.: General Washington / Inscribed To His Memory By D. Eccleston / Lancaster / MDCCCV. / high relief portrait. Rev.: He Laid The Foundation Of American Liberty In The XVIII Century / Innumerable Millions Yet Unborn Will Venerate The Memory / Of The Man Who Obtained Their Countrys Freedom / The Land Was Ours (native figure). Br., rd., 75 mm. AU condition, two spots in the obverse field.
Created in 1805, six years after Washingtons death, this bronze medal portrays Washington as a military leader by British artist Thomas Webb. The medal was created by Daniel Belteshazzar Plantagenet Eccleston (ca. 1745ñ1816), a British merchant and insurance broker who lived in Lancaster, England. Eccleston commissioned Webb to produce bronze medals to honor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and George Washington in 1805. He sent the Washington medal to various Americans, including then-President Thomas Jefferson, Washingtonís nephew Bushrod Washington, and Supreme Court chief justice John Marshall. Jefferson designed a circular frame for his copy of the medal and hung it in his home Monticello in Virginia. Eccleston was a Quaker and sympathized with the Native population as evidenced by the native figure with the words: "The Land Was Ours." None of the punch marks mentioned in the Stacks Bowers November 2019 sale are present on this piece. Q. David Bowers mentioned in his May 2023 article on coinupdatenews.com that several hundred exist.
