Buffalo Hunt, Chase, by Catlin, framed lithographic reproduction illustrating an Indian buffalo hunt across the American Great Plains. At age 17, George Catlin (1796-1872) studied law and was admitted to the Bar in 1819. He so disliked practicing law that he gave up that career after only two years and enrolled in art school, becoming recognized for his skill in portraiture. He became interested in preserving the experiences and ways of life of the American Indians, and he subsequently made five trips across the United States to paint what he saw in American Indian culture, even as white settlers were pressing inexorably across the continent. He was also a collector of Native American artifacts, and he used these as reference materials in his artworks, which he gathered and published in folios. His 1844 North American Indian Portfolio was reproduced in 1970 by Sparrow Press in Chicago as tinted lithographs. This mounted, matted, and framed print is one from the limited edition set of 1000 copies. Professionally mounted, matted, and framed in verdigris-toned wood and glass, finished size is 27-3/4 x 21-3/4 inches with a matte opening of 20-1/2 x 15 inches. The frame appears to have never been hung. See photos for condition and content details.
