Preliminary Mineralogical and Geological Map of the State of California issued by the California State Mining Bureau, January 1st, 1891. This is a beautiful map printed in color on paper and mounted on a cloth backing supported at the top by a wooden pole. The work is credited to Wm. Irelan, Jr., State Mineralogist, and it shows the colored outlines of the occurrence of eight rock types identified in the state at that time. Surely of interest to many were the rock units marked as Auriferous ("gold-bearing") Slates and Auriferous Gravels. Also marked on the map are twenty types of precious metal and industrial mineral deposits from Gold and Silver to Asphaltum and Borax. The paper map has become fragile, and the top 12 inches are flaking off of the cloth backing, however the lower majority of the map remains intact and easily readable. William Irelan, Jr. came to California in 1870 with an education in mining and chemistry. He taught mining chemistry and metallurgy until 1885 when he became president of the state mining bureau, but resigned in 1886 to take the position of state mineralogist, during which time this map and six volumes on maps and mining in California were produced. He resigned in 1893 to become the manager of the California mining exhibit and soon of the entire California exhibition at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
