Geological Map of the Country Around Vredefort Surveyed in 1923-5 by Louis T. Nel, M.Sc., assisted by A.K. Parrott. Published by the Union of South Africa, Department of Mines and Industries, Geological Survey.-A.W. Rogers, Sc.D., F.R.S., ETC., Director. Reference Section, Horizontal Section ABCDE and Horizontal Section FG shown along far right. Reverse: S. AFRICA - VREDEFORT AREA, GEOL 1925. The area is the home of the UNESCO site of the Vredefort Dome, a gigantic scar left behind when a huge meteor (estimated size 10km diameter) collided with the earth about 2023 million years ago. The impact site is south of Parys, creating a 300 km wide, the biggest and oldest meteorite impact crater found on Earth. The impact happened about 2023 million years ago, at a time when the only living thing was a type of algae. To create a crater 300 km wide, the meteorite must have been about 10 km across and moving over 10 km per second. The Vredefort Dome is only the central part of the impact crater, called a dome because the rock layers were bent into the shape of an upside-down bowl 90km across by the impact. There are many gold -mining and prospecting sites in the dome area, dating to the late 19th century. Sections of exposed gold-bearing reef are visible throughout the area where sites are found, but mining in this area did not last long and development ceased within a short period of time. Multi-colored, measures 32" x 43", on rollers. Fair condition with soiling along the bottom, tears along the top roller, foldlines, with several tears along edges.
