Geological Reconnoissances in California, from Philip Thomas Tyson's Geology and Topography of California. Dated 1850, Baltimore, measuring 12.5" x 15.5". An important early regional map of Northern California covering the recently discovered Gold Regions of California. Tyson visited the Gold regions in the summer and fall of 1849. Carl Wheat notes that Tyson's work was "probably the earliest work of a true scientific research to emerge from the Gold Rush. Its author was a gifted scientist whose pioneering effort was of considerable value." Dated camping areas noted from July 4 near Berry, July 16 near Spanish Bar, August 1 at French Camp, and August 5 at Armidor. Holabird notes that this "might be the earliest detailed geologic map of the gold country." Minor foxing, torn along right edge.
