A collection of correspondence and documents relating to George W. Simons, a Union soldier who served in the 25th Regiment, dating from 1862 to the 1910s. The collection contains six letters sent during the Civil War to Simons from his friends and former comrades, telling him about their experiences in the war. One particularly dramatic letter from his former regiment comrade 'J.H.H.' beautifully describes victories and losses of the regiment since Simons' departure, describing military action as well as the loss of individual soldiers: of one captain, he writes that "he has served his country well and has now gone to reap his reward in Heaven. Peace to his ashes." The letters carry a strong undercurrent of patriotism and belief in the Union cause. Three pieces of correspondence from the years following the war are also included; these include a personal letter as well as the attempts of George and his daughter Mary Simons to secure his pension. Also included are three official wartime documents: two certificates of discharge for Simons, and one legal document remitting the fee he was to pay for an unspecified court case.
Two of the wartime letters are written on patriotic letter sheets, one with an engraved illustration of a Union soldier and cannon with the text 'One Country - One Constitution', and the other of Gen. George McClellan. Also included are six postal covers, including two patriotic covers: one pictures an eagle on America's coat of arms with the text "NO COMPROMISE", and the other has an illustration of Gen. Nathaniel Lyon on horseback.
Items in the collection are in varying but overall good condition; some are torn along creases, but all are fully legible with minimal wear.
