A U.S. Mint striking from replacement dies of the classic Washington medal that was conceived by Philadelphia merchant Joseph Sansom and engraved by John Reich in 1805 prior to his full-time employment as an engraver at the Mint. The original dies, used to strike medals for Sansom at the Philadelphia Mint from 1805 through the 1820s, must have remained in Mint care for decades thereafter, with nearly exact replicas being produced in the late 1850s to satisfy the collecting boom in Washington-related medals. Produced in bronze and silver, with one gold specimen in the John J. Ford Collection. bronze replacement die strikings had an original mintage of 308 pieces. City: State: Date: 1859-1879 HWAC# 51826
