A great shot looking down the expansive Clear Creek Canyon showing the difficult terrain surrounding Clear Creek Valley. Cabinet card photograph measures 6"x4", gray single matte 7"x4 1/2", high to medium contrast-some yellowing, and the focus is sharp. Photographer, Alexander Martin, was active in the area in 1884 and 88 and through much of the state. The side of the cabinet card tells that the photo was published in Georgetown at "Alex Martin's Rocky Mountain Scenery." The town is located 45 miles west of Denver. Regarded as the first important silver city in Colorado, it was not without complications. Florin reports " The town went through all the discouragements suffered by other camps in trying to extract silver from refractory ores. Poor communications, the worst kind of terrain and almost impossible travel, kept methods of getting at the shiny metal crude and costly."
