Two stock certificates for the Georgia-Alabama Investment & Development Company issued in 1891 and signed by Benjamin Butler as president. Not cancelled. Brown border with patriotic vignette. Benjamin Franklin Butler ( 1818-1893) was a lawyer, major general for the Union in Civil War, and later served in Congress and as governor of Massachusetts (1883-1884). During the Civil War, he helped popularize the idea of effectively freeing fugitive slaves as contraband in service of military objectives. While in Congress, he co-authored the Civil Rights Act of 1875 (giving African Americans access to public accommodations) and the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, granting federal authority to prosecute and destroy the Klan in the South. He also had a large role in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. (Prag Collection) City: State: Alabama Date: 1891 hwac# 34609
