Signed by Governor Benjamin Butler Franklin of Massachusetts as president. Number 2309 issued to Henry F Thomas for 5 shares in 1891. This company was an early attempt at industrialization at Tallapoosa. By 1893 it was sold at auction - as an unsuccessful venture. Butler was a colorful and controversial character all of this life - especially during the Civil War and his occupation of New Orleans. He signed orders against women who spoke poorly of Union soldiers. He took $800,000 from the French consul that had been placed there by Southerners. Corruption was rampant for sure, but he was never indicted. He always seemed to be acting outside the law - but not so far outside to ever get in serious trouble. After the War he was the House of Representatives lead figure in the impeachment proceedings of Andrew Johnson. This lot includes an interesting biography of Butler and a copy of a report to the stockholders in 1891.
