Number 101 to Sophia R Gelbach for 38 shares in 1898. Signed by Arthur Paris secretary and Alfred E(?) president. Nice looking simple stock certificate. No edge issues, staining, dog ears, or pin holes (one hole smaller than a pin where the incorporation stamp has been applied). The Georgia Bauxite company was located on the Mary Bank, Julia Bank and the Connesenna Bank. These mines are about three miles from Barnsley. "The ore found in the bottom and on the sides of a moderately deep narrow ravine which cuts directly into the eastern side of a dolomite ridge and it is also found scattered over a surface of from 400 to 450 feet in length. Two open cuts averaging more than 200 feet in length, and in one case from 30 to 40 feet deep, have been opened indicating the removal of a considerable quantity of the ore The ore is distributed in streaks and pockets through a red white and mottled clay The clays contain more or less of the pebble and boulder of scattered through them." [Preliminary Report on the Bauxite Deposits of Georgia by Watson] John Banner was the first to identify bauxite in the Georgia region and the Georgia Bauxite and Mining Company was the early producer.
