Choice toddy ladle with twisted whale baleen handle. Silver ladle made of hand hammered silver coin with 1762 George III quarter guinea in the center of the bowl. The hand hammered silver coin is probably a thaler. The bowl is 2.25" in diameter (56mm), handle 8.75" long. The bowl has fancy birds and floral patterns with grapes, much more intricately designed than most ladles, which are relatively plain in design. There is much speculation among collectors of the dates these ladles were made- some postulating they were made the year of the coin. The wood handle also helps date the piece, as whale bone handles came into play about the 1760's. However, one reference cites the custom of making ladles from coins passed along by forefathers, and this ladle is of fine enough construction to fit that model. (See Notes and Queries: a medium of inter communication for literary men, artists, antiquarians, geneologists, etc; V2, p8; 1862). Another custom worth mentioning regards the gold coin in the center of the bowl. Anglo tradition has long maintained that a gold coin placed in the center of a liquid vessel represents long and happy life. This is a choice numismatic collectible. This ladle is easily one of the finest we've ever seen. HWAC# 33579
