After WW1 it was decided by the allies Germany had to pay reparations, which caused Germany's economic collapse. These bonds were issued to obtain foreign currency to pay their debt. With nothing backing them they became worthless, with most Germans' using them to heat the fireplace. This bond value at the time was worth approx. .80 cents American.
