Two large iron sections of a hydraulic monitor used for eroding hillsides into the sluices of miners recovering placer gold in California. Brass nameplate reads // HENDY / HYDRAULIC / GIANT // AS MANUFACTURED BY / JOSHUA HENDY IRON WORKS / San Francisco, / California / U.S.A. //. It is serial number 7168, Size 2. The cast iron valve is labeled //HENDY / NO.2 / SUNNYVALE / CALIF //. These giant nozzles sprayed water under high pressure to wash down soil and gravel that would then be directed into a variety of gold-recovery equipment they had available to capture whatever dust or nuggets of yellow metal they could. The erosional damage was often catastrophic, and the practice was phased out in California by the early 1900s. This lot includes two pieces of a large monitor thought to have been used in California. One piece is 94 inches long and 9 inches in diameter. It has a 9.5-inch ball joint on it. This fed into the second piece which is 112 inches long and tapers from 7.5 inches to the 4-inch exit hole. See photos for details.
