# 3415 for 100 shares to J. W. Sparks & Co. Signed by vice president P Shockley and secretary W. H. Clark. Dateline Goldfield 1906. Incorporated in South Dakota. Business located at Goldfield and Mines at Bullfrog, Nevada. Red seal. Native American vignette with a sailing ship in the background. Stains an heavy folds. This is an important Bullfrog (or Rhyolite) stock certificate as it was incorporated within the first year of Rhyolite's existence. "Since Jan 1906 the stock has sold up to $1.21 and the low record since Jan 1907 is 12 cents Competent authorities advise waiting until the definite information promised by the management is forthcoming." [United States Investor, Volume 18, September 1907] One can see that John Sparks has most possibly lost nearly a $1,000 on this stock alone! JW Sparks was Governor of Nevada at the time this stock was purchased. Shortly after this stock was purchased, the Goldfield miner's went on strike. At the insistence of George Wingfield, Sparks asked President Theodore Roosevelt for Federal Troops as the strike was about to get violent. The troops came in, reported to President Roosevelt there was no probability of violence and Roosevelt chastised Sparks. Sparks had a conflict of interest with as an owner of mining stocks at this time! (Much more about the strike, Governor Sparks' role, Wingfield's manipulation of the law, and the innocent men sent to prison for murder.)
