Globe-Miami Hills District, Gila County. Group of 8, including: 1) Old Dominion Mining and Smelting Co., dated 1898. 2) Two Arizona Commercial Mining Company, dated 1915 and 1927. 3) Inspiration Central Mining Company, dated 1919. 4) Three from Globe Dominion Copper Company, dated May 4, 1918. All issued to Luke, Banks and Weeks, signed by J.H. Jenks and B.O. Thralls. 5) Magma Copper Company, dated 1929. The early silver mining around Globe started in the 1870Ís, but the silver had played out by the early 1880Ís, and copper was recognized as the future of the district. In 1880, the Old Dominion Mining Company of Baltimore was founded and erected two smelting furnaces. By 1886, over 22 million pounds of copper were produced. The railroad reached Globe in 1898, lowering freight costs for smelter coke and copper. World War I brought high demand for copper, high prices, and large profits. By 1919, 1400 men were employed at the Old Dominion, but financial troubles caused the smelter to close in 1924 and the mine closed in 1931. Date 1898 Globe, AZ hwac 20931
