Very rare. "Gold Bluff, Klamath County, Cal." (printed along the top). Inc. March 1873. No. 99, issued for 10 shares to company president James Battersby on April 18th, 1873 in San Francisco. Signed by Battersby and secretary AD Carpenter. Not cancelled. Attractive design with gold border, black print, and vignette of steamer ship! No printer listed. Folds, borders trimmed tight. 4.75 x 9.25" According to an article in the Sacramento Daily Union (April 1st, 1873), this company was "formed to dredge for gold-bearing sand in the ocean beach, near Gold Bluff, Klamath County." Trustees include C. W. Moore, A. D. Carpenter, H. C. Howard, William Ensburg, Wilkie Darling, James Battersby and Daniel McDevitt. Gold Bluff was a very famous district located 50 miles north of Eureka. It was actively mined from 1852-1880 and produced over $1 million in gold (W. Clark, 1908, pg. 180).
