Very rare Cripple Creek stock with an important autograph. Inc. in Colorado. No. 163, issued for 100 shares to WS Stratton in April 1897. Signed by WS Stratton on the reverse. Signed by WH Hoagland as secretary and vice president (unusual). Stamp cancelled. Black print, ornate border, and fantastic vignette of two volcanic craters (same vignette is on the reverse). Folds. WS Stratton was Cripple Creek's first mining millionaire. He discovered the Independence Lode near Victor in 1891. He found a gold vein close to the surface worth $3 million in 1893. The Gold Crater Mining Co. property consists of the Globe, Close Shave, Lady Stith, Deerhorn, Deerhorn No 2, and Pride of the Rockies; in all about 35 acres, all patented in section 18, on Globe Hill. Also owns the Callie, about 5 acres, in section 19, on Gold Hill, adjoining the Anaconda [Cripple Creek Manual Vol. 1, Hills]. By 1902, the company had been transferred to Stratton's C. C. AI. & D. Company.
