1865. Extremely rare. Bullion receipt No. 357 for 2 packages of bullion received at the Gold Hill Assay Office on Oct. 4th, 1865 at 840 AM from the Savage Mining Company. Bullion from Pinte Mill and weighed 223 lbs. Signed by Conrad Wiegand as assayer per C. Shane. Reverse has pencil calculations. Two cent revenue stamp attached upper left corner. Measures 9 1/2" x 3 3/4." Crease mark and soiling right side. Some soiling around edges. Pinhole. Conrad Wiegand founded the Gold Hill Assay Office only five months before with financing from William Sharon. His life in Gold Hill was full of conflict and tragedy. He was even mentioned by Mark Twain in Roughing It. Weigand's death in 1880 was ruled a suicide, but foul play was suspected.
