Lot of 3. The Gold Hill Assay office was founded by Conrad Wiegand, passed onto Dowling, back to Wiegand's son, and then sold to W.S. James. 1) 1890 Memorandum of Bullion for the WS James Gold Hill Assay Office. Sample from the Justice Mine. Two large bullion bars (over 1000 ounces each), 0.950 silver fineness. These bars would then be sent to the Carson City Mint. Signed by assayer WS James. 6 x 7.5" The Justice Mine was one of the most important mines of Gold Hill producing over $3,000,000 in bullion by early 1878. The claim 2100 feet; 50 shares per foot. The claim is located between the Silver Hill and Keystone claims and just north of the Woodville. (p. 209-10 Pacific Coast Mining Review 1878-79). 2) Rare half letterhead/billhead for the Gold Hill Assay Office, operated by WS James. Typed message signed by James. 1899. To the bank in Carson, regarding the Shirley contract. 5.25 x 8" 3) RARE real photo postcard of someone hauling ore in Virginia City, 19th century view.
