This territorial Comstock COD is dripping with history. It is issued to JC Clark, who was a cousin of mining magnate George Hearst. Jacob Clark came with Hearst to California during the Gold Rush, and then to Nevada with him at the beginning of the Comstock Lode Rush in 1859. There, Hearst arranged to buy a one-sixth interest in the Ophir Mine. This investment was the start of his mining legacy. In the 1864 Collins directory, Clark is listed as co-owner and superintendent of the Hoosier State Mill in Virginia City. The directory lists the other owner as Geo. Hurst [sic.]. The two are also listed as a partnership, Clark & Hurst [sic.]. In 1864, it appears that Clark was also elected sheriff of Storey County. No. 174. Dateline Gold Hill N.T., March 21st, 1863. Issued to JC Clark for $900. Signed by Clark on the reverse. 4 x 8" on green paper with 5 cent stamp. Rare piece tied to one the original "Comstockers."
