This is one of the great Nevada token rarities. S. Schweis / Prop. / Gold Hill / Brewery // Good For / One / Drink. Brass, round, 24mm. This is a pre-1900 token. (Schweis died in 1893.)

This is a Comstock business that dates back to the territorial years! Sylvester Schweis operated the Gold Hill Brewery with partner F. Bodemer in 1864. It was located on Main Street in Gold Hill opposite AB Paul's Banking House (according to an ad in the Collins 1864 VC directory). Mark Twain could have had a drink here! The partnership with Bodemer ended in February 1865. He then partnered with Jacob Mayer. Their partnership ended in July 1871. Past that point, Schweis operated the brewery alone. In 1873, he bought a bagatelle table (a billiards-derived indoor table game,) for the brewery, the first in Nevada (Gold Hill Daily News, July 30th, 1873). The brewery is mentioned in numerous articles in the 1860s and 1870s, and appears to have been a well-liked establishment. Schweis died in April 1893.
