Group of four from the Prag collection, including: Two from "Merger Mine Mill, Gold Hill, Nevada. 69."; "Belcher Mine, Gold Hill, Nev.;" and "Comstock Mill Gold Hill Nev 278." Gold Hill began in the late 1850’s, at about the same time as Virginia City, when silver and gold were found. Although initially little more than a few tents and crude shacks, by the early 1860s it rivaled Virginia City in size and population. The town was incorporated in December, 1862 in order to prevent its annexation by Virginia City (legendsofamerica.com).

Gold and silver mining began in American Flat after 1860 when the Comstock discoveries extended beyond the Gold Canyon ravine. By 1864 American City had become a town and tried to secure the territorial capital from Carson City (nevadastatepersonnelwatch.com). City: Gold Hill State: Nevada Date: hwac# 20964
