These are two acrylic embedments that not only contain ore specimens from the Pueblo Viejo Gold Mine in the Dominican Republic, but encapsulate a bit of historical drama as well. The Puebla Viejo (Old Town) Mine is thought to be the first gold mine in the Americas to have been exploited by the Spaniards in their conquest of the New World in the sixteenth century. It is now reputed to be one of the largest gold mines in the world. The company name on these embedments is Rosario Dominicana S.A., which had worked the mine from 1975 (as commemorated by these embedments) until it went bankrupt in 1999. In 1991, that company was being led by General Antonio Imbert Barrera, who was at that time the only surviving member of the supposedly CIA-backed assassination of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1961. The mine is currently co-owned by Barrick Gold (60%) and Newmont Goldcorp (40%). Each disk is three inches in diameter and one inch thick.
