The Cannon Mine occupied approx 5,000 acres southwest of Wenatchee, Washington. Gold production began as early as 1894 but operations ran in fits and starts into the 1930s and 40s. Anaconda and Cyprus independently made discoveries in the area, but it was not until the 1980s that a partnership between Asamera Minerals and Breakwater Resources were able to bring the mine into full production, eventually becoming the second-largest underground gold mine in the country. Reserves of more than 5 million ounces were reported in 1984 at a grade of 0.214 Au oz/ton. This specimen is a small slab from a high-grade portion of the Cannon Mine showing a characteristic banded structure with visible gold and electrum (a grayish silver-gold alloy). It is approx 2 x 1.5 x 0.4 inches and weighs about 38.6 grams. Larger slabs from this same ore body are offered in this auction as well.
