Before we start on this description, it is important to note what this work is. It is, quite simply, one of the all-time most important works on the California Gold Rush. Bruff hand-illustrated his was across America in 1848. The 2 volume work contains his illustrations. The original work is now split up and sold, no longer in a single archive. Over 1400 pages of journal, appendixes, and drawings. Some drawings are within the journal entries and some within full page sketches (over 70). Two panel fold out of Lassen’s Rancho and a five panel foldout of the Acapulco. Joseph Goldsborough Bruff (also known as J. Goldsborough Bruff; October 2, 1804 – April 14, 1889) was an amateur artist and adventurer as well as a professional draftsman and cartographer. He attended West Point for two years before becoming a merchant seaman. He later served as a draftsman for the United States Navy and a mapmaker for the United States Army. In 1849, he formed the Washington City and California Mining Association and led an expedition to California seeking gold. He kept a detailed journal of the expedition. It is a fascinating first person look at the 1849 trek across the plains. Bruff tells the story with humor and marvelous detail. 1944. First edition. Fabulous Condition. FHWAC# 43806
