"A Prospecting Party", illustrated gold rush letter sheet lithograph by Britton & Rey, San Francisco. Four illustrations in horizontal format. These four illustrations tell as tory of a prospecting party of three miners journeying to the wilderness with their pack mule. It follows through to the miners digging a prospect pit while the mule grazes, then the trio lose the mule over the edge of a cliff, followed by the miners returning to a new prospect, this time their clothes in shambles. It is rarely discussed, but there is a good chance these four scenes are from a local story or song. Baird 209. He states the piece was issued before April 8, 1855. Single sheet on white wove paper, "5" in upper right corner. Baird located eight copies, scarce. This lettersheet is nearly identical to another in this sale on blue wove paper, the classic paper of the 1850s.
