Collection of 42 includes 7 prints of sketches of California Gold Rush towns - Nevada City, Downieville and Grass Valley - by renown artist George Mathis, plus about 35 reprints of historic photos, mainly mining, of the Mother Lode. The sketches are of trains, bridges, Empire Mine in Grass Valley, and historic towns. They are each 13" x 10", and signed in ink by the Mathis on heavy paper. Taken from the "20th Year Your Alpha 1971 Calendar" and 1976 Alpha Calendar. Descriptions of each sketch penned by artist. Some of the photo reprints are of Nevada City, California, but most are unmarked and of Gold Rush era mining and logging camps, and downtown scenes. George Mathis (1909-77) was an art major at Washington State Univ. where he studied with William T. McDermitt. Upon graduation in 1931, he moved to the SF Bay Area where he worked as a commercial artist. He relocated to the Gold Rush country in 1948, settling into a Victorian house in Nevada City. His drawings and sketches of the area earned him the title, "Pictorial historian of the Mother Lode."
