Cert. #31, issued for 25 shares in 1872. Incorporated in 1872. Location: Ophir Mining District, Placer Co., California printed to the left of the eagle vignette. The Ophir district is located in the vicinity of the old town of Ophir, a few miles west of Auburn. Gold bearing gravels were discovered at Ophir and Auburn in 1848. The quartz veins were developed and the Ophir and Duncan Hill districts were organized. Appreciable amounts of high-grade ore were recovered from the 1860's- 1880's (Mindat.org). According to Gudde, the district's gold production exceeded $5 million. Ophir is now a ghost town, but shows on most modern maps. Eagle and shield vignette. 25 cent I.R.S.
