Very cute, small leather saddle, patent 2,252,971 on the rear guard of the saddle where the maker's mark is often placed on regular saddles. "Denver" punched in the corners of both side edges of saddle. 4" x 3" x 4". some minor scuffing.
Morris E. Goldstein applied for a patent on this souvenir saddle March 28, 1941, receiving a formal patent August 19, 1941. In his original patent papers, Morris explained he wanted to make a replica of a roping saddle, comparatively accurate and manufactured at a reasonable cost. In so doing, he wanted to cut back on the large amount of sewing used for a regular saddle, and in place of the stitching used pressed lines into the leather. The saddle even has a faux "rope" attached at the side as a lasso. The intent was an affordable souvenir for tourists who came west and wanted to take home a souvenir reminding them of cowboys, cattle drives and the western culture.
The saddle includes all of the original souvenir display which is a wood horseshoe with a cowboy hat at the top, also in leather. As a complete unit, it differs strongly from the other seen online, which does not have the complete display.
These appear quite rare, and we have not had one from the many Colorado collections we have sold over the decades.
