The most sought-after Comstock autograph! Bank of California, RN-B with green NV revenue printed on the left border. Issued on May 3, 1870 to Wm. Veal for $108. Signed by Philip Deidesheimer as supt. Spindle cancel. Deidesheimer was a brilliant German engineer who solved a problem plaguing the Comstock mines. Larger cavities were not stable due to the soft nature of the Comstock rock. In 1860, while working for the Ophir mine, Deidesheimer created the square-set timber system which essentially made the timbers interlock into cubes. The design was so ingenious it was adopted elsewhere in the mining world. He may have only signed these Gould & Curry checks for a single day!
