Early Gould & Curry check issued in 1865 to JC Clarke (sic.). Not endorsed by Clark. JC Clark was a cousin of mining magnate George Hearst. Jacob Clark came with Hearst to California during the Gold Rush, and then to Nevada with him at the beginning of the Comstock Lode Rush in 1859. There, Hearst arranged to buy a one-sixth interest in the Ophir Mine. This investment was the start of his mining legacy. In the 1864 Collins directory, Clark is listed as co-owner and superintendent of the Hoosier State Mill in Virginia City. The directory lists the other owner as Geo. Hurst [sic.]. The two are also listed as a partnership, Clark & Hurst [sic.]. In 1864, Clark was also elected sheriff of Storey County.
