The most sought-after Comstock autograph. Bank of California check with green print, RN-B imprinted revenue (center) and green 2 cent NV stamp in border. Dateline Virginia, May 3rd, 1870 (based on other Deidesheimer checks issued on the same day). Issued to Michael Kent for $112. Signed by Philipp Deidesheimer. Damage on right side: chunk missing and stain near autograph. Deidesheimer was a brilliant German engineer who solved a problem plaguing the Comstock mines. Larger cavities were not stable due to the soft nature of the Comstock rock. In 1860, while working for the Ophir mine, Deidesheimer created the square-set timber system which essentially made the timbers interlock into cubes. The design was so ingenious it was adopted elsewhere in the mining world. Deidesheimer did not patent his invention. Bonus item is an illustration showing square-set timbers underground. 5.25 x 7"
