One of the most sought-after Comstock autographs. Bank of California check with green print, RN-B imprinted revenue (center) and green 2 cent NV stamp in border. Dateline Virginia, May 3rd, 1870. Issued to Jno. Rourke for $120. Signed by Philipp Deidesheimer. Spindle cancel repaired. Some stains on reverse. Deidesheimer was a brilliant German engineer who solved a problem plaguing the Comstock mines. Larger cavities were not stable due to the soft nature of the Comstock rock. In 1860, while working for the Ophir mine, Deidesheimer created the square-set timber system which essentially made the timbers interlock into cubes. The design was so ingenious it was adopted elsewhere in the mining world. Deidesheimer did not patent his invention.
