The most sought-after Comstock autograph! No. 7702, issued on May 3, 1870 to Walter Noy for $110. Signed by Phillip Deidesheimer as superintendent. RN-B plus printed green NV stamp. Cancel repair on reverse. Nice, clean example. Deidesheimer was a brilliant German engineer who solved a problem plaguing the Comstock mines. Larger cavities were not stable due to the soft nature of the Comstock rock. In 1860, while working for the Ophir mine, Deidesheimer created the square-set timber system which essentially made the timbers interlock into cubes. The design was so ingenious it was adopted elsewhere in the mining world. Deidesheimer did not patent his invention. All Deidesheimer checks known were issued on the same day, and less than two dozen examples are currently known.
