A great and rare piece from this key Comstock mine. Issued 1865 with vignette of Virginia City in February, 1860 and tied in revenue stamp. Issued to Thomas bell. "Thomas Jefferson Bell, argonaut of Nevada, for fourteen years a member of the Nevada legislature, miner, rancher and outstanding figure in the business and political life of the state. In the placer diggings of Plumas county he heard of the finds on the Comstock and he trekked eastward again to Virginia City, arriving there before the end of 1859, the year of the discovery of the Comstock, so he really became a resident of Nevada five years before statehood. Virginia City held him until 1869, when he again moved eastward to the White Pine district, at Hamilton. Later he went to Eureka and then to Austin, being in all of pioneer camps of that part of the state shortly after their important discoveries were made, and during a part of their boom periods." from findagrave.com. Signed by Alpheus Bull as president. "Arriving in California in 1849 he was a minister of the Gospel. Shortly after his arrival here he moved to Red Bluff and Shasta, where he had a successful experience, and was soon one of the most prominent, wealthy and respected merchants of Northern California. He was then a member of the firm of Bull, Baker & Co., but having acquired a fortune moved to San Francisco, and became connected with the Fireman's Fund Company as its Vice-President. He was president of the Gould and Curry and many other mining companies. During these years he amassed a million or more dollars. Besides his home at Leavenworth and Francisco streets, where he has lived a great many years, Mr. Bull was possessed of considerable other real estate in this city. He was also interested in a large number of corporations and owned a majority of the stock of the Gold and Stock Telegraph Company. He was also the owner of a one-third interest in the California Market. He was considered a remarkably shrewd man, careful and polite in business matters and of a retiring disposition." from cdnc.ucr.edu Virginia City Nevada Herzog Collection
