Lot of 4. Three are issued to Hiram Oyer, who had the exclusive contract to supply the Gould & Curry Mine with lumber. The last is issued to CW Bonynge, listed in the Collins directory as a lumber dealer. One check signed by Charles Strong, three by his successor Charles Bonner. One with rare red cancel. Oyer came with a small group of men from Michigan to California during the Gold Rush. Oyer's partner in VC was Nelson Champlin, who had come out with him and joined him in VC in 1861. On October 20th 1864, the Gold Hill Daily News reported that Oyer had left Armitage's drug store in VC and realized he was missing $3,460 in greenbacks. Detectives were on the case!
