Circa 1890's photo or print by Hudson, hand painted and enhanced by her with water colors at the time, given to Col. M. H. Hecht. Original oak frame and mat, approximately 16 x 20", from an important Mendocino family. Grace Carpenter Hudson (1865-1937) was a well known artist of the Pomo people. Col. M. H. Hecht worked under California Governor Markham until 1891, when he resigned to manage the Yosemite and Big Tree groves. Sometime in the late 1890's, Hecht moved to San Francisco, became a capitalist, a Board member of a bank, and owned the Emporium and Golden Rule Bazaar. There, he sold pieces such as this. The work here has clearly been enhanced by water color. It has been reported the work is original enhancement by Hudson, which makes sense since the piece was presented by her to Hecht. A photo of Grace and John Hudson comes with the piece. The last Hudson original oil sold for over $40,000 recently. Provenance: important Little Valley family.
