Joe Hooker of Post No. 11, Alameda, Cal. 8 inches long, 3 inches wide. The Grand Army of the Republic was formed after the Civil War in 1866 as a fraternal organization for veterans, with hundreds of posts all across the country. The GAR was disbanded in 1956 when the last surviving member died. A civil war memorial is located in the Mountain View Cemetary in Oakland, resting place of 200 Civil War Veterans. The memorial represents the Lyon & Appomattox Oakland post, the Joe Hooker Post of Alameda, and the Lookout Mountain Post of Berkeley. City: Alameda State: California Date: hwac# 35131
