Stock Certificate from the Grand Port City Mining Company. Certificate number 492 issued in May 1862 to Mrs Martha Staughton. Signed by D Randall, and WC Chambers. Printed by News Printer Company, Denver, C. T. Size 7.5 by 5 inches. In EXTREMELY Nice condition, issued. "One original Share in Grand Port City, Utah Territory, containing Fifty average Lots, to be drawn after the First day of May 1862." Allegorical vignette. Includes a map of Grand Port City on the Green River, Grand River and Colorado River. The location of this city is now in the middle of Canyonlands National Park, south of Green River Utah on I-70. There is nothing there today. It was founded at a time about eight years before the Powell Survey, which later introduced Americans to the region. The cert is rare, with perhaps less than 5 known. It may be the earliest known Utah certificate.
