# 1 for 500 shares to Dumont Clarke. Signed by President T. Dean and Secretary Wm. J. Osborn on February 18th, 1880. Vignette of four miners working underground; another smaller image of a woman. Printed by Franklin Banknote Co., N.Y. Staining upper left, otherwise extremely nice. The town of Rico was founded in 1879 high in the San Juan Mountains . This area known as the Pioneer Mining District, produced a number of rich silver mines but was extremely difficult to develop as the land to the south was controlled by the Ute Indians. In the 1880s, mining supplies, freight and settlers came over the mountains from the nearest railroad station in Rockwood, north of Durango, via the Scotch Creek Toll Road. Clarke was president of the American Exchange National Bank in New York. Two page biography included!
