Receipt dated Jan. 30, 1864 for $75 from E. Rulisen; signed C. T. H. Palmer (per H. A. Clements). A 2 cent blue “Bank Check” Internal Revenue stamp. Blue paper printed by Towne & Bacon, S.F. Charles T. H. Palmer was Yale graduate who joined the thousands of 49’ers along with some of his classmates. In the summer of 1852 he managed the Wells Fargo Office in Ophir a few miles west of Auburn. After catastrophic fires in the following two years Palmer moved and set up another Wells Fargo Office in Rattlesnake, then a principal town on the American River. Soon after he opened another Office at Dotan’s Bar. His friend Charles T. Blake joined him in the town of Granite (later renamed Folsom) setting up another Wells Fargo Office that handled banking, the express business and assaying. The building was constructed of granite assuring fireproof security. Today the building remains a landmark in Folsom. Shortly after he married the daughter of Sherman Day of mining fame at the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine near San Jose. Roger Day, his brother-in-law, soon joined him in Folsom taking over the assaying from Blake. The firm was handling large quantities of gold dust and growing rapidly and shipping the assayed gold ingots to the San Francisco Mint by the new railroad connection . (Ref. “Charles T.H.
