Grant Smelter photo with hydraulic monitor by W H Jackson, Denver, 4.75x6". "The Grant Smelter began operations in 1878 on the northern bank of the California Gulch drainage, just inside Leadville's city boundaries . The smelter was sold to the Eddy and James Sampling Works in 1879 and the partners reorganized the firm under the name Grant Smelting Company. At the end of 1879, the company built a 1,000-foot long rail track for dumping slag. In 1880, it was the largest smelter in Leadville, processing local ores as well as ores from other Colorado counties. It operated until a fire destroyed the plant in 1882. It is estimated that 154,000 tons of slag were generated during the four years the Grant Smelter operated (EPA, 1991)." from regulations.gov. Light contrast. [ Leadville Colorado
