Colonel William C Greene, It’s thought he added title of Colonel to impress Wall St. Financiers, he wa never officially. Credited with discovering the rich copper reserves in Cananea, Sonora , Mexico. Founded the Greene Consolidated Copper Co. in 1899. In 1905 he was considered one the wealthiest businessmen in the world. Greene started off as clerk, worked for the Northern Pacific RR as a surveyor member, staked out the site of what is now Fargo, N. Dakota. Worked in both mining and cattle, working with local natives and outlaws (Poncho Villa regularly stole horses from his ranch in Arizona). While rounding up cattle on his ranch he spotted a reddish stain that covered the Cananea Mts. in 1898 and this was the beginning of his empire. By 1905 he had gone through $12 million of stockholders money eventually forcing the sale of the Cananea Consolidated to Amalgamated Copper ( Anaconda). During this time in 1906 he used the 275 volunteers, Arizona Rangers Mexico Rurales, Mexico Federal troops and the 5th US Calvary to suppress the strike. In addition to all this he built two railroads, reduction works, factories, a thriving town and mining operations. He even helped capture Geronimo. Got into a neighbor dispute w/Burnett over a river dam, which resulted in the death of all but one daughter, he hunted the man down in Tombstone and shot him by the O.K. Corral.
