Lot of 50. Fabulous collection spanning many years in the history of this well-known winery. 1) Ten early cards (c1906-1913). Three are Mitchell: two unused exterior views (Dry-Wine Cellar and Novitiate & Normal School), and one used litho (mailed 1907). Three are Pacific Novelty Co.: triplicate of exterior view, all three mailed (1910 and 1917). Two are Smith & Metzner: duplicate of exterior view, mailed (1910 and 1913). One from Elite Studio: exterior shot of entrance, mailed 1906. Finally, one from Joe Galewsky: exterior mailed in 1907. 2) Four RPPCs (c1940s-1950s): one RPPC (Zan) of exterior view of chapel, mailed 1951; two white border photo cards, both exteriors (view from road and aging cellars), one mailed in 1958; and one RPPC showing monastery and vineyards, unmailed. 3) Three reproduction photo cards: all exterior views, one (Pacific Novelty Co.) with writing on the back but not mailed. One is Smith & Metzner with toning. Last is smaller photo by Chas. McCullough. 4) Thirty-three chrome cards: many duplicates, most are exterior views. The religious order of the Christian Brothers started distilling in 1882 as a way of raising money for the order’s schools and programs. During Prohibition, they grew grapes for sacramental wine. After the repeal of Prohibition, and with the help of teacher-turned-wine-chemist Brother Timothy, they expanded their products to include commercial wine and brandy. They bought the Greystone Cellars building for sparkling wine production from 1950-1989. The facility is currently a campus for The Culinary Institute of California.City: County: State: CADate:
