This certificate represents a difficult period just after the discovery of the Comstock, when two highly skilled and educated men conned the father of two deceased miners, who history has granted the rights of discovery for the Comstock Lode, Hosea and Allen Grosch. These two skilled professionals were Benjamin Nickerson and Sam Hastings who later founded the Hastings School of Law in San Francisco. The Grosh Consolidated Gold & Silver Mining Company was no more than a powerful scam. They sold stock ñ not to fund a mine ñ but to pay for litigation against the core of the Comstock, attacking the exceptionally highly producing and profitable Gould & Curry in their 1863 suit. This was a direct follow-up to their 1860 suit against the Ophir Mine when they incorporated the Washoe Silver Mining Company. perpetrated the same scam, the Washoe Silver Mining Company. This is stock certificate number 429 for 1 share issued on 12/31/1864 to Benjamin Nickerson. Signed by secretary Charles Ryan and president S. C. Hastings. Includes two vignettes: a bare-chested allegorical woman and a prospector on the move. Includes a 25c United States revenue stamp on the bottom left. Printed by Britton & Company of San Francisco.
