In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person on the path of enlightenment who is dedicated to the enlightenment of all people.

The bodhisattva named Guan Yin is known for great compassion and mercy, and her full name means "the one who hears the cries of the world."

Inspired by this teaching, Chinese wood sculptor Zhang Lizi began carving her image from the trunk of an enormous camphor tree, working diligently for more than half a year to fashion it with great detail and powerful symbolism.

When completed in 1999, this monumental carving was acquired by Chinese businessman Chunlin Zhu who displayed it in his family's Los Angeles store. This carving of Guan Yin was considered so significant, that Chinese Buddhist Monk, the Venerable Hsing Yun, traveled from China to California and visited the store just to see it in person.

In the late 2000s, when Mr. Zhu closed the store and returned to China, the carving was put in storage, and since then, it has not been seen by the public…

…until now!

It is the great privilege of Holabird Western Americana Collections to bring this magnificent work of Buddhist art back into public view in all its glory! Fully eight feet tall, six feet wide, and carved from a single piece of natural camphorwood, this beautifully ornate representation of Guan Yin is surrounded by Nine Dragons signifying the powerful dynamic forces of nature. She stands among them with two joyful children at her feet and pours sustaining water from a vessel in her left hand.
