This magnificent sculpture by Chinese artist Zhang Lizi is titled "Nine Dragons of Guangxi." It is a representation of the Chinese goddess Guan Yin, the bodhisattva, or goddess of mercy and compassion. She is often depicted with dragons (can you count all nine?) and two children. In her right hand she holds a Sacred Vase from which she pours life-sustaining water. This amazing work of art was carved from a single piece of camphor tree root! It stands eight feet tall, six feet wide, and it is 2-1/2 feet from front to back. We understand this was carved by Zhang Lizi in 1989, and it is in very good condition. There are some natural cracks as one might expect to develop over time in a large, single piece of wood. See photos for close-up views of this exceptionally rare and truly unique piece of Buddhist art. Guangxi Province China 1989
