Gary Bracken's Denver Gun Wa Chinese Remedy pint collection. Four different colors, medium lime green, deep red amber, root beer amber and yellow amber. All heavily whittled and only the medium amber specimen with stain, the rest appear beautiful mint, please inspect. Gun Wa appears to have been produced by Williams H. Hale in Denver starting in 1888. Gun Wa himself, may have had his start in Denver prior to that time, though Preble does not discuss the dates of Gun Wa's involvement. Gun Wa was a Chinese remedy specialist. As a Chinese, during a particularly difficult time for Chinese in America, in the 1880s, white businessmen tried to exclude Gun Wa and ran him out of town. First he fled to England, then returned to New York in 1894, where he was promptly arrested and put in prison for about a year. Gun Wa bottles are known in quart size also, please see another lot. All of the earlier bottles are square applied top, bitters style. A second newer bottle, tooled top, appears to have been produced during the 1890s by Hale. This is one of the very few embossed Chinese American business bottles known. It is from a sad period of the American West when racism caused unusual exclusionary practices.
