Gun Wa's / Chinese Remedy //Warranted / Entirely Vegetable / And Harmless. Light yellow amber with a touch of green, Square drugstore bottle. 10" tall. The Gun Wa bottles are highly desirable and quite rare. They come in colors from dark amber to green and every shade in between. The owner of the company was William Hale an Irish immigrant to Denver in 1888. Prebble notes that Hale himself may have masqueraded as Gun Wa, a famed Chinese physician. The remedy or cure was supposedly good for almost anything, much like walking into a tourist Chinese herb shop today. At some point Hale moved into the same building as embossed whiskey merchants Croff & Collins. Hale was charged with mail fraud and fled to England. In 1894 he returned to America and was immediately arrested, sent back to Denver, and convicted of mail fraud. The reed collection contains 7 different colors of the pint version of this bottle.
